Hard-shell hot tub hire

A hard-shell hot tub is a moulded acrylic spa in a cabinet, the same type of tub people install permanently in their gardens. It has proper seats at different depths, adjustable massage jets, stronger insulation and a more powerful heater, so it holds its temperature better in cool weather and recovers faster after use. Hire tubs are usually designed to run from a suitable 13 amp supply, but some larger models need a dedicated circuit.

The trade-off is size and weight. A hard-shell tub is delivered on a trolley or dolly, usually on its side, and needs a clear route from the road to the garden, typically at least around 90 cm wide with no tight turns or steep steps. It must sit on a firm, level surface that can carry well over a tonne when full. We check access and the base before booking, then deliver, fill, treat and heat the tub for you.

How it works

How hard-shell hot tub hire works, step by step
  1. Measure the route

Measure the narrowest gate, side passage or doorway and note any steps or slopes, as the tub travels on its side and needs more room than an inflatable.

  2. Confirm the base

A patio, paved area or concrete slab is ideal, and raised decking must be checked for load before we agree the spot.

  3. Deliver and heat

The tub is wheeled in, set level, filled and treated, and the heater brings the water up to temperature with the lid on.

  4. Collect

At the end of the hire the tub is drained to a suitable drain, cleaned and taken away on the trolley.

Hard-shell hot tub hire: FAQs

How wide does the access need to be?

Most hire suppliers ask for a clear route of at least around 90 cm, but it depends on the tub's depth when it is on its side, so check the exact figure for the model you are booking. Measure gates, side passages and the gap between bins or walls, and mention steps, slopes, gravel and tight corners. If a hard-shell tub cannot get through, an inflatable is usually the answer.

Does a hard-shell tub need a special electrical supply?

Many hire tubs are designed to plug into a 13 amp supply, but some larger spas need a dedicated 16 or 32 amp circuit installed by an electrician. Whatever the supply, it must be RCD protected and suitable for outdoor use, and a standard extension lead should not be used. The supplier should confirm the requirements for the specific tub before booking.

Can a hard-shell hot tub go on decking?

Only if the decking has been designed or checked to carry the load. A filled hard-shell spa with people in it can weigh well over a tonne spread across a small area, which is more than many garden decks are built for. Ground-level patios, paving and concrete slabs are usually suitable. If in doubt, choose a different spot or have the deck checked.

Is a hard-shell tub warmer than an inflatable?

Generally, yes. The insulated cabinet and thick lid hold heat much better, and the heater usually recovers temperature faster, which makes a real difference on cold evenings and in winter. It also means the tub can usually be used for longer sessions without the water cooling, as long as you follow sensible temperature and time limits.
